THE CONCEPTION OF FUNDAMENTALISM AS A MOVEMENT

Postbellum liberal Christian education was built upon antebellum German theology.  German theologians, which led Germany into two world wars, attacked the Bible by replacing faith with reason and science.

Here is a partial list of bad guys:

GEORGE HEGEL 1770 – 1831

Philosophical evolution

FERDINAND C. BAUR 1792 – 1860

He claimed that Peter and Paul were in conflict and they contradicted themselves.  He dated the New Testament by Petrine, Pauline or Johannine sources.  He asked who copied who.  He asked how did Luke get his information on the early life of Christ?

He taught that truth was hidden in error

DAVID STRAUS 1808 – 1874

He wrote, The Life of Christ, which denied the deity, the virgin birth, miracles, and inspiration.

ALBRECHT RITSCHL 1822 – 1889
Taught that religion is the social conscience of dependence.  The Bible is only a community consciencness: it is as any other book.

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804),
Immanuel Kant (1724 – 1804)
was a German philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. He is regarded as one of the most important thinkers of modern Europe, and his influence on Western thought is immeasurable. He was the starting point and inspiration for the German Idealism movement in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, and more specifically for the Kantianism which grew up around him in his own lifetime.

His works, especially those on Epistemology, Metaphysics and Ethics, such as his masterworks the “Critique of Pure Reason” and the “Critique of Practical Reason”, achieved a complete paradigm shift and moved philosophy beyond the debate between the Rationalists and Empiricists which had dominated the Age of Reason and the early Age of Enlightenment, and indeed to combine those two apparently contradictory doctrines.

F. Schleiermacher 1768 – 1834.

Schleiermacher’s “Life of Christ” appeared in 1864… He admits on an equal footing, as conception of the resurrection of Jesus(as), a return to consciousness from a trance-state, or a super-natural restoration to life, thought of as a resurrection.

In the 1780’s, young Frederich Schleiermacher readily absorbed Kant’s philosophy. Although he had abandoned faith in the deity and vicarious atonement of Christ, Schleiermacher would enter ministry and become the “Father of Modern Theology.” The evolution of his theology is described by Dr. Mark Devine in “The Apologetic Betrayal of the Gospel” as published in the Premise Journal:
https://watch.pair.com/occult.html

They all had in common a belief that the Bible was as any other book, and the Lord Jesus is like any other man.  None of them believed Psalm12:6-8 which promises that God preserved His Words and when verse eight is taken in context, for those who do not believe verses six and eight things will get worse and worse for them and those they influence.

However, it was Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species, 1859, that cleared the way for “Christian” liberalism, which is built upon evolution theology.  Evolution theology exploded across America and that belief has enlarged Hell for the last 158 years.  Darwin provided the infidel “Christian” an excuse to rip off his costume, puff up his chest, and openly reject the Bible as God’s final authority, and thereby hoist up the flag of toleration and appeasement (Romans 1:32), and the Devil sang out in glee
“Oh happy day!”

Darwinism taught that man’s ultimate salvation was in the accumulation of knowledge.  The Darwinian theology was evolutionary it taught that a primitive God of war evolved into Christ – a worship from fear to love.

HOW EVOLUTION THEORY EVOLVED TO MAKE THE BIBLE AS ANY OTHER BOOK

Dr. Westcott, a professor at Cambridge, held to the Darwinian hypothesis as fact.  In 1890 he wrote, “No one now. I suppose, holds that the first three chapters of Geneses, for example, give a literal history – I could never understand how anyone reading them with open eyes could think they did” (Which Bible? 1980).  The orthodox position began to crumble under the canon shots of this brand new “Christian” religion (Galatians 1:6-9).

Dr. Westcott and his partner Dr. Hort are the two who are responsible for the teaching that the Bible is as  any other book and should be treated no different.  Those two scoundrels and Darwin get the credit for snuffing out the KJV.  It took well over 125 years but today in 2017 the NIV has replaced the King James Bible in total sales.  The LORD JESUS will soon return to this King James Bible, Jesus Jehovah denying world.

Back as early as 1805, Harvard, up to that time a solid Christian university devoted to training men for the ministry elected a Unitarian as its president.  Three years later in protest Andover College was founded.  Then in 1877, Andover replaced Harvard as the leading liberal college.  It held that infamous position until 1890 when the University of Chicago, built on Rockefeller’s money, became the new king of the apostate mountain.

Jude wrote

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Jude 1:3

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 1:4

THE NIAGARA BIBLE CONFERENCE

In obedience to Jude 1: 3-4, Bible believing pastors declared war.  The first beachhead was established in 1890 when 127 men formed what is known as the NIAGARA BIBLE CONFERENCE.  Here a spiritual ensign was raised that meant as much to these God fearing men as the flag flown at the Alamo.

Jesus had said, “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Mar 7:7

Therefore, at the NIAGARA BIBLE CONFERENCE solid Bible doctrines such as the second coming of Christ Jesus, dispensations, separation and taking a militant stand on the Scriptures as God’s final authority were clearly wrote out.
14 point creed of the Niagara Bible Conference of 1878:

  1. The verbal, plenary inspiration of the Scriptures in the original manuscripts.
    2. The Trinity.
    3. The Creation of man, the Fall into sin, and total depravity.
    4. The universal transmission of spiritual death from Adam.
    5. The necessity of the new birth.
    6. Redemption by the blood of Christ.
    7. Salvation by faith alone in Christ.
    8. The assurance of salvation.
    9. The centrality of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures.
    10. The constitution of the true church by genuine believers.
    11. The personality of the Holy Spirit.
    12. The believer’s call to a holy life.
    13. The immediate passing of the souls of believers to be with Christ at death.
    14. The premillennial Second Coming of Christ.

Most of the speakers were dispensationalists, and the Niagara Conference introduced many evangelical Protestants to dispensationalist teaching. The messages generally centered on the doctrines of Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, missions and prophecy. Premillennialism and dispensationalism was defended and taught.[3] Most of the leading dispensationalsts of the late 19th and early 20th century attended the conference regularly, including William Eugene Blackstone, Charles Erdman, James H. Brookes, William Moorehead, Adoniram Judson Gordon, Amzi Dixon, C.I. Scofield, and James Hudson Taylor (who founded the China Inland Mission).[citation needed]

The 19th century Fundamentalist preached a Saved by faith through grace message, separation unto holy living centered on the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as set forth in the KING JAMES BIBLE.  They also preached a real Hell where the lost “shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Rev 20:10).

They preached on street corners all across America and went door to door preaching Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour.  The results were countless lives changed forever and broken families repaired.  It worked then because those preachers were dedicated to God through the blood of the Lord Jesus, those, preachers knew God wanted folks saved even more then they did.  They had conviction about all that because they read it in the King James Bible.

SIDEBAR
and this is important
They, the ones in the above paragraph, knew that they had no power to bring results.  All they could do was to be obedient to the Scriptures and leave the results up to God.  What happened later was that when preachers failed to see the results they were expecting they thought that God needed some help so they compromised for the good of seeing souls saved, and neo-evangelism was born, separation was watered down and eventually eliminated from any consideration.

HERE FOLLOWS A LIST OF A FEW 19TH CENTURY FUNDAMENTALISTS:

CHARLES FINNEY (1792 – 1875)
He was a Presbyterian preacher who preached throughout the east.  Through his preaching 500,000 people committed their lives to Jesus Christ.

SAM JONES (1847 – 1906),

a Methodist preacher, his preaching shut down sin dens and they never reopened, as 2,500 in Baltimore, 6,000 in Toronto and 1,000 in Los Angeles ceased to do evil and learned to do good.
D.L. MOODY, 1837 – 1899,
a Congregationalist, who identified with the Holiness Movement but considered himself an evangelical preacher.
He determined now to focus on preaching the gospel of Christ, for he was convinced that the world would be changed not by social work, but by the return of Christ and the establishment of his millennial kingdom on earth. His conscious rejection of the old notions of postmillennialism and acceptance of premillennialism impelled him in a vigorous missionary effort for the “evangelization of the world in this generation.”

It seemed, as though our blessed Lord and Saviour would soon have the preeminence and a lasting revival would triumph over Satan, who is the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Perhaps many Fundamentalist were thinking,
I think the battle is over.
I think the battle is won.
There is none left but the dead and the dying,
I think Jesus has won.
However the enemy was not dying, in a few years liberalism would launch a brutal attack.  An attack so vicious that fundamentalism will never fully recover.
George Dollar, Ph.D., Litt.D., in his book, “A History of Fundamentalism in America” which should be required reading for anyone interested in perusing this spiritually rewarding study, lists ten truths that were presented at the Niagara Bible Conference.  For brevity I will list four that I think best describe the movement.

1]  A strict literalism in interpreting the Bible, particularly its prophecies

2] A clear-cut picture of the enemies of prophecy in schools of spiritualizers, postmillenarians, and figurative interpreters.

3] A continuing exposure of Romanism as the great enemy of the truth and the true Church, setting the stage for the coming of Babylon the great.

4] A constant rejection of men’s opinions in all matters of truth and practice and constant relience on plain Scriptures.

The battle cry sounded and it was accepted by:
A. J. Gordon (Baptist),
Bishop W. R. Nicholoson (Episcopal),
J. H. Brookes (Presbyterian),
L. W. Munhall (Methodist),
W. J. Erdman(Congregational), and
G. N. Peters (Lutheran).
It was Scriptural ecumenism, ok there is no such thing as Scriptural ecumenism but because it was a conviction of wanting to do right the right thing God will use it to bring about Scriptural fundamentalism.

Fundamentalism, yet nameless, was conceived at the NIAGARA BIBLE CONFERENCE.  The gestation period would be about 35 years, and the womb would bare twins Baptist and Presbyterian.

next time the birth of Fundamentalism.
