ISAIAH CHAPTER 13 PART 1
In this post, all Bible verses are highlighted in BLUE. When I am going to comment on a word or phrase often I will highlight it in VIOLET. quotes are in ORANGE.
NOW LETS GET INTO ISAIAH CHAPTER 13.
Isa 13:1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
Burden: Here burden is meant that this is an important message with a heavy dose of grief and destruction.
The burden is directed towards Babylon, but it is preached in Jerusalem.
God gave Isaiah this vision for the Jew’s future encouragement, as they would eventually be held prisoners in Babylon, their Temple and city destroyed, many family members and friends slaughtered. However, I am sure they ignored God’s promise of His future vengeance upon Babylon. Latter when Israel was held captive in Babylon and subjected to the hardships of slavery it must have been a huge encouragement and
cultivated what all depressed people need – hope.
That is what the Bible does it gives hope,
1ST Thessalonians 4:13, Titus 2:13.
Today if you were to stop the first one hundred people you meet and asked each one, “have you read the Bible in the last month?” How many of those would answer, “Yup, sure have.”
When is the last time you read it, of course that is like asking that question at a fundamentalist Bible convention, so let me ask you something else, when do you think your neighbor last read it? Now let me ask you one more question and then we will move along, “What are you going to do about that?”
ISAIAH CHAPTER 13 AND 14
ARE ABOUT BABYLON’S DESTRUCTION.
This AMAZING chapter of Scripture confirms the truth and accuracy of Bible prophecy because When Isaiah preached it Babylon was taking orders from Assyria, and the Medes were a very weak nation.
I found the following interesting. However, If history bores you or you get frustrated with dates and times then just scroll down to the next verse.
HERE ARE A FEW WOW FACTS,
Isaiah was written in 740 B.C.
However Babylon didn’t become a power to be feared until after they thoroughly defeated Assyria and that happened at THE BATTLE OF CARCHEMISH in 605 B.C.
“Battle of Meggido Ends the Assyrian Empire (605 BC): The last remnant of the Assyrian army escaped from the defeat at Nineveh. They were joined at Megiddo by the Egyptians. The Assyrian-Egyptian alliance is thoroughly defeated by the Babylonians, bringing an absolute end to the Assyrian Empire, while extending the emerging Babylonian Empire to the Mediterranean Sea.”
After Babylon defeated Assyria, they then attacked Jerusalem.
Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar fully conquered Israel in three stages.
In 606 B.C.
Daniel and many others were taken prisoners to Babylon
In 598 B.C.
10,000 prisoners were taken back to Babylon
In 586 B.C.
Babylon destroyed the Temple and Jerusalem was ruined.
Isaiah’s prophecy was about the DESTRUCTION OF BABYLON BY THE MEDES (Isaiah 13:17) That happened in 539B.C.
LET’S DO THE MATH
ISAIAH WAS WRITTEN around 740 B.C.
And Babylon was conquered by the Medes in 539 B.C.
740 – 539 = 201
THEREFORE, if those dates are correct
Isaiah wrote Chapter 13
201 years BEFORE Babylon became a world power, and when the nation of Media was weak.
HERE ARE SOME more FACTS ABOUT BABYLON
In 740 B.C. that’s when Isaiah preached, Babylon was under ASSYRIAN power. This means, that even though it was a huge city with high commerce it was never the less powerless, and depended on Assyria for its protection.
HOW BABYLON DEFEATED ASSYRIA AND BECAME A SUPER POWER
Sargon king of Assyria conquered Israel in 720B.C.
16 years latter in 704 B.C. Sargon died in battle and his son, Sennacherib was named king of Assyria and
Not only Babylon rebelled but many other nations also revolted in hopes that the unproven Sennacherib would prove to be a weak warrior king.
When both Judah’s king Hezekiah and the king of Babylon rebelled, Assyria needed to make them an example. The reason being the Assyrian god demanded it and besides that, the Assyrians enjoyed killing their enemies and destroying their cities, just like ISIS does today. No mercy could or would be given. Therefore, both Judah and Babylon would have to be made an example of because they had rebelled against their god, Ashur, and his wife Ishtar.
You can read about what happened when Sennacherib attacked Jerusalem in the 14th year of King Hezekiah’s reign in
2nd Kings chapters 18 and 19.
There is a religious connection between ancient Assyria and today’s Islamic terrorism, such as ISIS. They both believed their god is a warrior god who demands the spread of terror and the decimation of life and property as they fight to subjugate the world.
However, according to the following article that may not hold true for modern day Assyrians.
The current Iraq conflict has been covered by much of the world’s media, and frequently the Assyrians are mentioned alongside the Kurd and Arab populations. Yet while the Assyrians are a crucial part of Iraq’s history, they are neither Kurd nor Arab, but a distinct ethnic group.
A largely Christian people with their own language, culture, and flag, this ancient Semitic group traces its roots to the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians of antiquity. This makes these people indigenous to “ancient Mesopotamia,” the land we now know as Iraq.
During the 20th century, Assyrians began to consider the concept of nationalism, a notion introduced by the British and were promised a state of their own. This, however, was never implemented leaving the Assyrians defenseless and stateless. Over time, the Assyrians were subject to unjust treatment in which successive and repressive governments attempted to deprive them of their Assyrian identity.
I copied the above from
Another piece of information follows.
“Assyrians are predominantly Christians; they adopted Christianity at the hands of the Apostles themselves. Christianity and the Church played a duel role in the Assyrians’ lives: First, it gave the Assyrians a new legacy and through the Church saved their language to this present day. Second, it played a dangerous role at the expense of the Assyrian national aspirations. Some Assyrians even today recognize themselves according to their ecclesiastical designations. Assyrians are erroneously called Nestorians (members of the Assyrian Church of the East), Chaldeans (members of the Chaldean Catholic Church), and Jacobites (members of the Syriac Orthodox Church). The Vatican gave the Biblical name Chaldean to those Nestorians who in 1552 converted to Catholicism in order to distinguish between the two groups. There is no connection whatsoever between the Modern Chaldeans, who existed always in northern Mesopotamia, and the ancient Chaldeans of Babylon (southern Mesopotamia). In fact, the Vatican insulted the Assyrians by giving the converts this name since the Bible clearly shows that the name Chaldean meant nothing but magician, astrologer, and soothsayer (Read Daniel, Chapters 2, 4 and 5). Other Assyrians belong to the Syrian Catholic, Presbyterian, Evangelical, and other denominations.”

The above is all new information to me. it should make a fascinating study.
BABYLON CAPTURED the capital of Assyria, NINEVEH, In 612 B.C.,
That happened around 90 to 100 years after Isaiah chapter 13
Isaiah’s prophecy states that the Medes would destroy Babylon
Isa 13:17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
Isaiah’s prophecy named the Medes as conquering Babylon, which they did without a fight.
HERE IS A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON THE MEDES.
Media is the home of the Medes
“Media, ancient country of northwestern Iran, generally corresponding to the modern regions of Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and parts of Kermanshah. Media first appears in the texts of the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III (858–824 bc), in which peoples of the land of “Mada” are recorded. The inhabitants came to be known as Medes.”
“The modern day descendants of the Medes may be the Kurds, who are right now caught in the middle of this conflict, but who are very eager to destroy Iraq in revenge for the terrible atrocities inflicted upon them by Saddam Hussein. Easton’s Illustrated Dictionary lists the Medes as part of the Assyrian Empire, which covers the area of today’s Iraq, Syria, Lebanon. This area borders on the mountainous border of Iran (Persia). NOTE: Take a look at the map we print, below, which shows the population dispersion in this very area.
Remember, the army that destroyed Babylon in Daniel 5 was a combined army from Medo-Persia (Kurds-Iran).”
Cyrus, king of Persia, and the Medes were closely related through marriage: His father Cambyses king of Persia married Mandane of Media, making his son Cyrus both Persian and Mede.
Isa 13:2 Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
BANNER: A flag, also an ensign, Isaiah 5:26 and 11:10.
UNTO THEM –unto the Medes (Isa 13:17)
SHAKE THE HAND, in an encouragement to attack
GATES OF THE NOBLES: there were eight gates around Babylon, the most important one was the gate of the Babylonian god, Ishtar
NOBLES–Babylonian. These were the tormenters of the Jews. In Isa 14:5, the “rulers” are the wicked nobles here.
Isa 13:3 I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness.
MY SANCTIFIED ONES: when I read sanctified I think of God’s people. That is not the case here.
MY SANCTIFIED ONES
they were not sanctified inwardly.
a personal thought:
sanctified means set apart for God’s service
Real Christians are sanctified saints. That’s a fact. Too many Christians rebel against that and it is only the blood of Jesus that holds back the wrath of God on such a disobedient people as we are.
How disobedient are we? Because we have a guaranteed home waiting for us in heaven, bought and paid for with the precious blood of Jesus we are complacent and thoroughly disobedient trampling the blood of Jesus under our flesh craving feet.
Repent and preach the gospel, and just keep on preaching and doing right (1st Thessalonians 5:22) until we go up to meet Him in the air (1st Thessalonians 4:13-18).
MY SANCTIFIED ONES are the war craving Meeds and Persians who are sanctified to fulfill God’s holy purpose
(Jeremiah 51:27, 28 and Joel 3:9, 11. Just as the Pharaoh was sanctified in Exodus.
ISAIAH is preaching about the destruction of Babylon only that will happen over a hundred years in the future.
ISAIAH actually hears the commotion. He sees the fear thick and intensifying on Babylonian faces.
WAR IS COMING from a far country to destroy Babylon [ the next two verses 4 and 5]
FOR MINE ANGER: God is angry with the wicked every day
Psa 7:11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
Isa 13:4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a TUMULTUOUS NOISE of the kingdoms of NATIONS gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
TUMULTUOUS NOISE check out Isaiah 5:30
Isa 5:30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.
Nations –Medes, Persians, and Armenians composed Cyrus’ army
Isa 13:5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.
They, even the LORD –namely, “Jehovah,” and His armies which are “the weapons of His indignation.”
Even the LORD: in the sense that He was sending the Meads and Persians, even forcing them. They were His M1 Abram battle tanks. They were His weapons against Babylon, His war club, because they had persecuted Israel.
One reason for a pre-trib rapture is that God will also avenge those, Christians and Jews, who have been persecuted and martyred in the middle east even today.
And as far as America goes, when God sends His weapons of judgment and wrath it is not going to be pretty. So go ahead and keep on ignoring God’s grace and see what will eventually happen, if not before you die then after, as there is no escaping God’s wrath for all who have counted His son’s sacrifice a trite fable.
