THE GOSPEL ROAD TO HEAVEN
For those who may not be familiar with the Romans road here it is:
1] you are a sinner, Romans 3:10, 23
2] the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23 and Revelation 20:14
3] Jesus paid your penalty for your sins, Romans 5:8
4] you receive salvation by trusting in Jesus and calling upon Him in prayer,
Using the above outline, let me give you a plan I have come up with for this summer. Also, all plans should be modified and expanded to fit an individual’s need and that is really how the Romans road should be used.
When using any plan of salvation you should mark your Bible so you can easily turn to the appropriate Bible verses.
Let’s talk with Jesse. Jesse is a generic name that can be applied to both guys and girls, and I do not know anyone named Jesse.
“Jesse, have you thought about where you will spend eternity?”
That is a springboard question. No matter the answer you should be able to build a bridge across the chasm of death to the land of hope.
When you are sure you have piqued his interest, get him to understand that the Bible is the only way we can be sure about the future.
“Jesse, as we get older we form our beliefs from church, movies, books and experience.”
The Bible tells us in Romans 3:4
“let God be true, but every man a liar”
“Jesse, the Bible is God’s instruction Manuel.”
“Will you let me show you in the Bible what God says you need to know and what you need to do to escape hell and live forever with Him in heaven?”
[If you get a no then just have prayer with him and leave the door open for a future conversation. If not with you then someone else.]
“Jesse, the first thing we must know is told to us by Jesus Christ Himself in John chapter 3”
Show Jesse, John 3:3, 5, 6, 7.
Every one of those verses says that everyone MUST be born again.
1] Being born again is a prerequisite to heaven.
2] This is an either or thing.
a] If you are not born again you will be in hell forever
Jesus used questions to get people to think. We should do likewise. However your questions must be those you are comfortable in asking.
Now we use the roman’s road.
“Jesse, WHAT DO YOU THINK BORN AGAIN MEANS?”
No matter what Jesse answers go straight to the Bible.
“Jesse let’s see how God answers that question.”
The Bible teaches us that we are as broken as a smashed egg on a public bathroom’s filthy floor.
Just put emphasis on Jesse, do not use any other example.
Yes we are all rotten no good sinners BUT
This is between Jesse and God.
READ ROMANS 5:12
1] Adam passed his sin nature on to everyone us, perhaps through his corrupt DNA.
a) Adam infected the human race with a type of rabies.
b) There is no human cure available.
To reinforce that Jesse is a sinner,
turn to the following verses:
Romans 3: 10, 17, 18, 19, 23
All those above verses should be elaborated on, the thing is you must not go on to the next point until you are satisfied that Jesse knows he is a sinner.
If further references are needed to reinforce how much a sinner he is an ideal place is Romans chapter one verses 18 through 32. Read the passage beforehand and highlight those verses you feel comfortable in using.
THE NEXT THING JESSE NEEDS TO KNOW IS THAT BECAUSE HE IS A SINNER HE MUST GO TO HELL.
1] Show Jesse Romans 6:23
a] this death isn’t physical it’s spiritual as
Revelation 20:14, and 21:8 proves it so.
2] Next show Jesse the horrors of Hell Mark 9:43-48.
a] You can also use Luke 16: 19-31.
DO NOT GO ON UNTIL JESSE KNOWS THAT THE SCRIPTURES CLEARLY TEACH THAT HE WILL SPEND ETERNITY IN HELL IF HE DOESN’T GET BORN AGAIN.
The next two points can go relatively quick if Jesse is under godly conviction.
It is important for you to understand that you can’t do the Holy Spirits job. Your job is to give Jesse the gospel, God’s part is to convict him of sin, righteousness and judgement to come.
Jesse must make the decision to repent, believe, and call upon the Lord Jesus Christ to save him, not necessarily in that order.
“YOU – JESSE – ARE THE REASON THAT GOD SENT HIS SON TO DIE ON THE CROSS. HE DID THAT FOR YOU.”
1] Born again means that just as you were born physically. You must also be born spiritually.
a] When reading this passage explain how it relates to being born again
b] Take your time. The whole gospel is built upon this passage.
When reading verse ten point out that God loves His Son and if Jesse is in His Son then God loves him.
Now show him, Romans 5:6-10
And to reinforce show him, 2nd Corinthians 5:21
Ask him, “Jesse can you tell me what the LORD Jesus did for you?”
Now turn to the dynamite chapter in the Scriptures. The TNT of the gospel message, Roman 10: 9-10, but I like to start with verse eight and end in verse 13.
Explain to Jesse that salvation is a HEART THING not a word thing. Nobody is saved by uttering magic incantations.
Then show him Romans 10:13 and get him to pray. Remember the words do not mean a thing it is kind of like baptism, it is an act of obedience and claiming that you are not ashamed of Jesus.
After Jesse prays you should get him to promise to come to Church the following Sunday and walk the aisle.
You should tell your pastor what to expect and let him handle your convert’s next step of obedience: baptism and Church membership.
This post is just me having fun. You might enjoy coming up with your own personal plan, and I hope you do.
