a book report

HOW SAVED ARE WE? is a book that every Christian should read. If when reading it you are not affected by it then something is wrong with you – spiritually. Here is an example of what you will read:

The author is Michael L. Brown and the book was published in 1990 by Destiny Image Publishers.

I will give you the page number for some of the quotes.

I will not use quote marks to set aside what the author has written. Instead all quotes are in BLACK and my highlights within the quotes will be GREEN. I have also taken the liberty to use caps, and RED highlight to bring attention to what I want you to stop and think about.

Bible verses are in BLUE.

My comments are in BROWN.

The author does not use the King James; however I WILL USE IT EXCLUSIVELY.

I will also add extra verses to a Bible refference when I feel it can further support the reference given by the author. I give an example of that a few paragraphs down. So you can find it easily and I have put the added verses in [ ] and I have also highlighted the extra Bible verses in bold.
Adding verses to a specific reference should never be questioned. You just can not get enough of God’s Word, and every text must be taken in context or it is a pretext, (is that trite? Perhaps it isn’t for some readers). In the example below the reference is Matthew 7:21, and I have added verses 22 through 23. To keep this simple I will not continue to tell you that.


Stop for a moment and think:
Anyone who spends more time playing video games than seeking God in prayer has no right to call Jesus Lord.
Anyone who takes delight in today’s perverted soap operas is serving another god.
Anyone who cannot die to sports for a season is worshiping idols.

1John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.


It’s time for some serious soul searching. What kind of “born again” experience have we had if it calls for almost no personal sacrifice, produces virtually no separation from the world, and breeds practically no hatred for sin? How can we claim to be “born from above”? Where is the evidence of our “new nature”?

In the following quote I have changed “He says” to Jesus says

WE SAY, just confess Jesus and you are in
Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
[Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.]

WE SAY, “Just pray this prayer and it’s done!
Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

WE SAY, “Just come to the altar. It will only take a minute!”
Luke 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

It is true that Salvation isEphesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

And we can add nothing to it.
But it is the grace of God that teaches us
Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;



Denying the self means saying no to our desires.

Look for a moment at the needs of the world. There are more then 900 million Muslims across the globe today. How many workers are sharing the gospel with them? More than 150 thousand human beings for whom Jesus gave His life die every day. How many of them knew the Lord? Doesn’t He want to reach them? Isn’t He calling laborers forth? Then why do so few of us hear God’s call to missions? Because we live far from His voice! Page 8

Yet with so much time to pray, and with bodies that are often overfed, so few of us hear God’s call to sacrificial prayer and fasting. Why? Because we are more sensitive to our flesh then to the Spirit! Page 8

Oh, it’s not because we don’t care. It’s not because we’re totally unconcerned. But as A. W. Tozer has stated so clearly: It’s not that people don’t want God – it’s that people “found something they want more than God!” We are determined to have what we want most. “the rich young ruler made his decision on the basis of what he wanted most in life” (Tozer). He wanted Jesus, but he wanted wealth much more. He went away sad because in his case, as a lover of money, he couldn’t have both. Page 9


The following contains Bible verses that teach us what has happened to those who have been born again. I haven’t included the author’s comments on them.

John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with

Eph 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son

Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness

2nd Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

1st Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Of course, they don’t have to feel anything happening, they don’t have to cry or to shout. But if their lives are not inwardly affected, If they don’t soon experience a fundamental change of character, if they continue to live as they did, it is doubtful that they were born again! It is not always a matter of poor follow-up. As a pastor once said “The reason why some people backslide is because they never frontslid.”

…We have injured our hearers in two ways:
We have failed to tell them the old life MUST end; and
We have failed to show them new life in Him


Yet we apologetically try to present the gospel to our hearers as if they would be doing Jesus a favor by receiving Him into their heart.


How would a young man feel after he proposed to the woman he loved if she looked at him and said: “Yes, I’ll marry you. But do I have to give up my other boyfriends? Will you want me home every night? Can I still sleep around and have fun?” What would his reaction be? He would be hurt and disappointed. He would be deeply shattered and shocked. He expected her unswerving loyalty. He wanted a true mate for life.

What about Jesus our heavenly Bridegroom? Does He deserve less than that? Will He accept sinners if they do not pledge Him their loyalty? Yet we are afraid to tell the unregenerate that they must give up their “other lovers” if they want to be joined to Him. We don’t want to turn them off! What a pitiful mentality.

The above and the following are reasons why I am taking the time to type in what I have highlighted in the book. They are statements that should be thought about long and deeply. [me]

Why are you playing games?
Why are we trying to make God seem just in the eyes of man when it is man who needs to be just in the eyes of God?
Why are trying to make the gospel seem palatable to blind and lost sinners?
Why aren’t we boldly challenging them to throw off their lifestyles, to forsake their futile ways, and to run to the light and be saved?
Why aren’t we telling them: “your way is death. Your way means hell. Choose life and repent of your sin”
Why aren’t we letting them know that Jesus is THE answer – that forsaking everything in nothing in the light of gaining Him?


The cross makes sense only if mankind is hopelessly lost,
only if no one can be just in God’s eyes,
only if all of us have fallen infinitely short,
only if we truly deserve the sentence of death,
only if He would be perfectly fair in condemning us forever,
only if we can do nothing to save ourselves.
Only then does the cross make sense.
Otherwise it is the ultimate divine waste – Jesus suffered and bled for no reason.

Galations 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Our gospel has failed to attack one of the basic plagues of our race: self-righteousness.
Is there any sin God hates more than this?
Self-righteousness is idolatry.
Self-righteousness makes man into god and sets its own standards.
Self-righteousness brings a foul curse.

Jeremiah 17:5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

Matthew 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance

God can not help the self-righteous man

We must approach the unsaved with this reality. “Take the bandage off their eyes which Satan has bound round them; knock and hammer and burn in, with the fire of the Holy Ghost, your words into their poor hardened, darkened hearts, until they begin to realize that they are IN DANGER; that there is something amiss. Go after them” (Cathrine Booth).
They are perishing without the Lord.


The following is A WOW THOUGHT (me)
Why is it then that God’s people suffer virtually no prosecution here?
Because our gospel has no teeth!

One reason we do not preach sin to an individual is many Christians have a rotten testimony.

As American believers we have corporately spent hundreds of millions of dollars on our own edification while foreign workers could have evangelized hundreds of millions of their own unreached countrymen with the financial crumbs that fall from our tables. And to add insult to injury, despite all our efforts, our ministry to ourselves has left us inactive, passive and pathetically comfortable in a fallen, dying society. Is it any wonder that Satan is not afraid of our big talk? It hasn’t shaken the Church. How can it shake the world?

… When we tell people that they are sinners, that there is a consequence to their actions, that one day they will be judged for their deeds,
that without a doubt a guilty verdict will come, people get enraged!
But when all we say is “Only believe!” – no repentance, no commitment, no change of life required – why should there be any offense? How are we holding anyone accountable? How are we convicting them of sin?
We simply are not preaching the whole counsel of God.
If we were (with so much media exposure), the American people would be trembling in their boots.

Persecution arises when the gospel is a threat to a degenerated, perverted society and a cold, formalistic religious leadership. Good business for the kingdom of God means bad business for the devil. Of this we can rest assured: if we were making real inroads into Satan’s empire, we would be feeling his heat. Instead we have become one with the world and one with the religious establishment. That’s why we receive virtually no religious persecution from either.

If you are thinking not me well that only counts if you are actually in the fight. (me)

Also, when pre-trib is upon us will real Christianity be an after thought? And that is a thought that should be thought about. (me)

Luke 18:8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

….May God give us a whole generation of fire-tongued, brokenhearted, holy men and women of the Spirit, to shatter this world’s security by the power of the Word. Oh, for the sharp, piercing sword truth! Page 33

When Stephen accused the religious leaders of his day …
Acts 7:54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

But today we are making no one mad. Our messages put people to sleep rather than make them weep; they are calculated to win men’s praise, not to provoke their rage. Who are we confronting today? We have made our peace with the religious system.


We really are not that much different than the “dead” church. We go to service on Sunday mornings, attend a mid-week Bible study or prayer meeting, and leave our religion inside the sanctuary doors (if we’re serious enough to bring it home with us, we keep it locked in our homes!) WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD WANT TO PERSECUTE US? We are too harmless and mild.


2nd Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.


Paul wrote
1st Corinthians 5:9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
1Co 5:10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
1Co 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

Nowadays things are different: to follow Paul’s instructions, we would practically have to leave the Church.
That is one reason I go to a fundamental independent King James believing Church. Today, because of the above statement I believe in proselyting. (me)

Philippians 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Php 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
Php 2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
That must be our determined goal – to put no stumbling block before the world by our foolish actions, to shine forth and stand out because of our purity and holiness, and to clearly, boldly and uncompromisingly proclaim the living Word.

It is amazing to me that the author, after making the above statement, “proclaim the living Word”, still can’t see the illogical belief that any and perhaps all “bibles” fit into his above statement! Common sense tells us that things different are not the same. There is only one Bible that fits the above statement and that Bible is the KING JAMES 1611. he one Satan hates. If that isn’t true then there is no final authority as to what God has said. [me]

Commenting on what Paul wrote in Philippians 2:14-16, the author writes,
That must be our determined goal – to put no stumbling block before the world by our foolish actions, to shine forth and stand out because of our purity and holiness, and to clearly, boldly and uncompromisingly proclaim the living Word.

We must begin on our knees with open Bibles and open hearts. Page 40

We have to hate untruth and injustice.

…How much has our thinking been influenced by the ungodly? How deeply is our whole sense of values determined by this world’s priorities? Has sinful peer pressure and the desire to be accepted caused a weakening in our stance before God? Just who are we living to please? Page 40

…- as if the goal of our lives of faith was to see just how far we could sink into sin without actually drowning in it! Some people even think that being able to watch or read trash without being consciously polluted is a sign of maturity!

1Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
1Pe 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.



… There are many Asa-like ministries in our land (2nd Chronicles 14, and chapter 16:7-12). In the beginning they walked by faith and trusted God … But when the pressures mounted, they turned to the flesh – as if the help of man was more certain than the help of God! Page 47

When you read the next paragraph do so slow and thoughtful. [Me]

There are ministries today that resort to every kind of fleshly, high pressure, emotional tactic to stat afloat. Why? Because they are trying to perpetuate that which God has forsaken. They are desperately striving to prop up something that the Lord is not supporting. What began in the Spirit is now being carried out in the flesh. The heavenly aroma is gone. In fact, something stinks.


Isaiah 22:12 And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:
Isa 22:13 And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.
Isa 22:14 And it was revealed in mine ears by the LORD of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

Today we sing a new tune: “Let us eat and drink and be glad. America shall not die!” Little do we realize that the land of the free and the home of the brave is perishing before our eyes.

We are too busy having fun and pursuing our dreams to even realize that America is falling apart. [The author wrote that in 1990 and it is much truer today then it was then. (me)]

Then why aren’t we busy repenting? Why are we hardly interceding for our land? Why are we so nonchalant and numb? It is because we too have lost the fear of God. Judgment has become an almost meaningless word.

Deuteronomy 13:6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
Deu 13:7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
Deu 13:8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
Deu 13:9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
Deu 13:10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Deu 13:11 And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

Morality and honor use to be sacred. Page 53

It is often the guilty who are protected by law. That’s why America has not heard and is not afraid. That’s why so many among us do evil things again and again.

Those who protest abortion are jeered; those who practice abortion are cheered.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Isa 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

God has a record of every abortion, every rape, every theft, every murder, every lie, every injustice, every blasphemy, every adulterous affair, every homosexual union, every pornographic act, every satanic ritual, every godless sermon
Our “anything-goes” gospel has put us to sleep.

But with garbage cans overflowing with torn-up bodies ofv aborted babies, and our city streets stained with the blood of the slain, our very future hangs in the balance.
Ezekeil 9:9 Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not.
Eze 9:10 And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head.


Luke 12:18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Luk 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
Luk 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
Luk 12:21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

…We measure heavenly blessing by earthly bounty and equate real spirituality with financial success.

Today we really know how to “use the Word” – to get new cars and diamond rings! And we actually think all this is spiritual. God have mercy on us. Page 64


John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Act 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Revelation 1:9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

1st Peter 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.


Philippians 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

Suffering for him is a joy

Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

Luk 6:22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
Luk 6:23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
1st Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
1Pe 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.


Dying in an earthquake or wasting away with cancer is not part of “carrying the cross.” The CROSS IS SOMETHING WE PICK UP WILLINGLY. WE CAN CHOOSE TO PUT IT DOWN.

But carrying the cross does mean following in Jesus’ footsteps. And in His footsteps are rejection, broken heartedness, persecution and death.
“There are not two Christ’s – an easygoing one for easygoing Christians, and a suffering one for exceptional believers. There is only one Christ” (Hudson Taylor)

“When a nation calls its prime men to battle, homes are broken, weeping sweethearts say their good-byes, businesses are closed, college careers are wrecked, factories are refitted for wartime production, rationing and discomfort are accepted – all for war. Can we do less for the greatest fight that this world has ever known outside of the cross – this end-time siege on sanity, morality, and spirituality?” (Leonard Ravenhil)

There is a lot more however I want to free up my time and you should try to get the book. It’s a good one.

    read this. Seriously read this. How saved are we???
    Now, I’ve written recently that we cannot determine our salvation by our performance. But most assuredly, we need to GET REAL. We need to STOP FAKING IT. People are dying out there. For every 150,000 that die over 147,000 are going into Hell.
    stop and ask yourself how many of those didn’t get saved because we portray a bad image of what Christianity is????
    How many people have read my blog and turned away from God because of my meanness???
    Despite Michael Brown’s charismatic beliefs, I’ve always liked his preaching. This post is a must-read. Take ONE SIMPLE HOUR and think about this. How do you rate?
    I fail miserably.
