When I read the Bible I do not rush it,
BECAUSE I want quality not quantity.
Reading the Bible should be like a delicious intriguing meal, and therefore
I want to get the most out of every bite.
While reading Matthew Chapter three and four I got to thinking that this portion of scripture could easily picture somebody today – getting saved – and what he should do right after being BORN AGAIN.
Matthew chapter 3 is about Jesus being baptized and chapter 4 tells about what every new believer should expect while he is
growing up in a brand new way and in a brand new family.
Because Matthew chapter 3 is about Jesus being baptized to “fulfill all righteousness”, and baptism being a type or a picture of a saved sinner, I need to establish some Bible facts.
BEFORE THERE IS ANY MISUNDERSTANDING.
What I am saying is that –
The LORD Jesus is our EXAMPLE of how a Christian
– A BORN AGAIN follower of Christ Jesus –
a disciple of Christ –
should live, act, and think.
JESUS is the God man.
2nd Corinthians 5:21 tells us that
Jesus Christ never sinned –
For he [GOD] hath made him [Jesus] [God the Father made God the Son, Jesus,] to be sin for us, who [JESUS] knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Memorize that verse!
In Matthew three, Jesus sets the example for a believer’s attitude.
Jesus humbled Himself – so should we.
Jesus always did what was right – so should we.
Never EVER believe that the Lord Jesus committed any sin.
Remove that from the equation.
Take it off the table.
that is a given.
• It is a truism that Jesus, who was the second Adam, never sinned –
1Corinthians 15:45 Tells us that … “The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [Jesus] was made a quickening spirit.”
A quickening spirit makes dead things alive
JESUS – the second Adam
accomplished what Adam didn’t.
Jesus stayed righteous and in the end gave His life a RANSOM for many,
Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a RANSOM for many.
And in 1st Timothy chapter 2 and verses 5 and 6
1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a RANSOM for all, to be testified in due time.
The RESURRECTION is proof positive that Jesus is God and that He died TO PAY THE RANSOM for EVERYBODY’S sins. [John3:16]
Everything the Bible claims that Christ Jesus did HE DID
And everything Jesus said is true.
That statement is proved by His RESURRECTION
Tell me ABOUT your experiences with dead people coming back to life – By dead people I mean “he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days” John 11:39 –
Jesus was in the grave 3 days but you get the point.
Here is a side bite:
[ Today, all we have is the Bible for absolute truth.
Yet, today there are well over two hundred translations of the Bible.
What’s up with that?
Any fool can figure out that if the new bibles are copyrighted, and everyone is – 1st Timothy 6:10 – then those modern bibles must all differ in a lot of places – completely changing words and eliminating whole verses
[things that are different are not the same].
Does it make any sense that an all-powerful God would let man corrupt His Word so that we would have to treat the Bible as any other book?
Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Your faith is directly proportional to your faith in the absolute truth of the Scriptures
God could and can and has preserve His wordS.
God is not limited by man – but man is limited by sin.
So I will believe Psalm 12:6-7 and 8
Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Psa 12:7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt PRESERVE them from this generation for ever.
Psa 12:8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.
Taking verse 8 in context I believe that most, and probably all, modern Bible correctors are wicked for trying to undo what God did in preserving His wordS.
And as a result the wickedness of our world increases and will continue to increase – with the love of many waxing cold [Matthew 24:12] until the time of the gentiles comes to an end – Luke 21:24.
Jesus said in Matthew chapter 7 which is part of His famous sermon on the mount.
Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
• The fruit of the King James 1611 Bible is evident in the Philadelphia church age – Revelation 3:7-13 – which corresponds with the 1700’s – 1800’s. That was a time when most Christians and even the NATURAL MAN [1st Corinthians 2:14]
believed in the King James Bible as the absolute final authority of God.
The Catholic Church hated it and tried, unsuccessfully, to get rid of it. Then in the late 1800’s along came Darwin and a couple of heretics named Westcott and Hort. Between them they succeeded to relegate the Bible to be like any other book.
Honest logic demands that we just trust God
To be God
and to put our faith and trust in
the Bible God uses and Satan hates. The King James 1611 ]
Okay enough introduction let’s now get into the third Chapter of Matthew.
Mat 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
This is the beginning of the ministry of Christ Jesus the LORD,
the miracle of turning the water into wine would come later.
Mat 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
Mat 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
Jesus said, “it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”
Without getting too deep here, and trusting that you have understood the introduction, I will give you the secondary personal application that I see in this verse.
There is only just one absolute truth in every verse in God’s Book.
A personal application can be different for different people.
Most people have no idea of how powerful and personal the Bible is because they have never spent much time with it.
That isn’t God’s fault it is your fault.
When someone gets saved by trusting in the gospel
[1st Corinthians 15:1-4], they get BORN AGAIN – John 3:3.
That phrase – BORN AGAIN – for many it has become trite but it is anything but trite, as it pictures what happens in the twinkling of an eye at the moment of salvation.
BAM! – one minute a lost sinner on his way to Hell and then instantly a child of God already in heaven!
There is much confusion about this NEW BIRTH. Most folks want to stay confused.
I hope that is not true of you.
I can tell you for sure what the Bible tells about it.
Here are a few of many verses
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened [made alive], who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us [made us alive] together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
AND IN 1st John chapter 2 verse 4 through 6
1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jn 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
1Jn 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Col 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Col 2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
1Pe 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
1Pe 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
1Pe 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
There are so many more verses that tell us that sinners once saved
NO LONGER look like the world,
they NO LONGER speak like the world
and they NO LONGER act like the world.
1Pe 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1Pe 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1Co 6:15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
1Co 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
I could and perhaps should go on
Instead let me tell you of my life before and after
being BORN AGAIN.
I love that phrase “BORN AGAIN.”
• How often have you wanted a do over?
Wished that you could go back to a certain age and fix things.
• Of course we can’t.
But what if it were possible to set things right today. What’s done is done but
you can become a new person in Christ Jesus – as I did.
Making it possible to do things the right way, and to fix things as you begin your new life as a disciple of the Lord Jesus.
Before I was BORN AGAIN I had certain thoughts about
life and death and sin and Hell and Heaven.
My heart wasn’t right so
it did not make any difference spiritually if my thoughts were right or wrong.
As a sinner the only thing I needed to understand was
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
That is because
1Co 2:14 the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The Bible verse God used to get me saved was
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
What I am getting at is that AFTER I was BORN AGAIN
I did not think the same way.
• In a TWINKLING OF AN EYE My want to’s changed.
• Before I was born again
I went to Church because I felt that was what God wanted me to do.
I didn’t feel comfortable when attending nor did I want to be there.
Christians were nice people but I found them strange and therefore I felt uncomfortable when being near them.
I wasn’t stupid though I knew they were going to heaven and I wasn’t and what that meant was that I had the problem not them.
After God saved me I wanted to be in Church.
I loved Christians.
and I loved the Bible
And most important I loved Jesus as God almighty.
I say all that because I DO NOT UNDERSTAND people who say they are saved
they still seem to love the world.
They haven’t been baptized and they seldom attend Church.
Or they had a bad experience – someone done um wrong – and they use that as an excuse to ignore Christ the Saviour and live a worldly life.
As if God is the blame for their bad Church experience.
That reminds me of 2nd Peter 2:19-22
2Pe 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
2Pe 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
2Pe 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
The FIRST ACT OF OBEDIENCE is Baptism and
THE SECOND IS Church membership.
Why wouldn’t a Christian want to be baptized?
It seems to me that a new convert would invite every lost person they knew to their baptism and tell the preacher, “Preacher I’ve invited everyone I know to my Baptism and even cashed in a few favors to get some here, so preach a good rip-roaring sermon – slay and spare not – and get as many saved as we can.”
That is what Johnny Mesinhiemer wanted to do as soon as he was born again.
What happened to me when I was born again was a complete overhaul.
No – not an overhaul – I was different.
I was not and I am not the same person today as I was before Jesus became my LORD and SAVIOUR.
If you have never experienced something like that then maybe you did not get born again.
How can you know for sure if you are BORN AGAIN?
Well if you still think, act and talk the same as you always have – then you HAVEN’T been born again.
I’ve been saved for 36 years, and today I should be in my prime – spiritually.
However I am not the same fervent servant as I once was because I LET sin ruin me.
The Christian life is always a choice to obey or not to obey. To submit when things make no sense or to go off on your own.
Sin is bitterness it is doing what YOU want to do.
That will make no sense to you if you are what the Bible calls a “NATURAL MAN”
1st Corinthians 2:14.
I know I am saved because I still think and love the same as when I was first born again. Besides we are promised eternal life when we get BORN AGAIN
1Jn 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
1Jn 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
1Jn 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1Jn 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Now let me ask you a stupid question, HOW LONG DOES ETERNAL LIFE LAST?
