First a quick REVIEW
AND THEN THE FINAL THREE CHURCHES: Sardis – Philadelphia – and Laodicia.
The first Church is the first Church
EPHESUS Revelation 2:1-7
EPHESUS runs from 100 A.D. to 312 A.D.
JESUS REPREHENDED THE EPHESUS CHURCH BECAUSE
IT HAD LEFT ITS FIRST LOVE
THE NEXT BIG EVENT IN CHURCH HISTORY IS
PERSECUTION – NOT THE WORST BUT THE FIRST
SARDIS REVELATION 2:8-11
NO CONDEMNATION – JUST COMMENDATION
THE NEXT BIG EVENT IN CHURCH HISTORY IS
THE CHURCH AND THE STATE MERGER
PERGAMOS REVELATION 2:12-17 this Church period was TRIGGERED BY CONSTANTINE
IT RAN FROM 312 TO 590
JESUS’ CONDEMNATION of the Pergamos Church can be found IN VERSES 14 AND 15
THE NEXT BIG EVENT IN CHURCH HISTORY IS THE DARK AGES
THYATIRA REVELATION 2:18-29
THIS CHURCH AGE WAS TRIGGERED BY JEROME’S TRANSLATION OF THE CATHOLIC ALEXANDRIAN BIBLE INTO LATIN
AND THE CHURCH MAKING IT A CAPITAL OFFENCE TO HAVE OR READ THE BIBLE.
THE THYATIRA CHURCH RAN FROM 590 TO 1514
Jesus rebuked Thyatira in REVELATION 2:20
TONIGHT I am GOING TO TRY covering three church ages and 500 years in about 30 minutes.
Just try to keep up
SARDIS, revelation 3: 1-6
The Reformation 1517 – 1790
The event that birthed this Church age was
Martin Luther nailing his 95 thesis to the Castle Church’s front door in Wittenberg Germany, in 1517
Jesus rebuked SARDIS in Revelation 3:1
Rev 3:1 ….thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
This is the Church age of LUTHER, John Knox, John Calvin and a ton more like them
they all were compromisers
ALL of them held to tradition,
and a form of Catholicism that contained
clergy – state religion and infant Baptism.
This Sardis Church period graded smooth the rough roads of Bible translation and transmission. It started when William Tyndale and Martin Luther translated the Bible into the common language, so that anyone could read it.
And, just as the absence of Scripture plunged the world into the dark ages – even so the publication and encouragement to read it brought on the reformation.
This was a grand time in church history, however many catholic doctrines and traditions hung on. Deism – which is not a Catholic doctrine – is a belief in God based ONLY on reason and observation, and it became popular during this Sardis Church age. Deists mounted many attacks on Biblical Christianity, which resulted in England turning to alcohol, gambling and fornication – in a hopelessness that mimicked the dark ages.
Jesus rebuked this Church age when He said, “thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.”
HOWEVER THE BRILLIANT LIGHT OF SCRIPTURE WAS TURNED ON AND NO DEIST OR CATHOLIC
NOR ANYONE NOR ANYTHING WILL EVER AGAIN PUT that light OUT.
During the previous Church age -The Thyatira Church period –
The Greek Church had manuscripts originating in Antioch of Syria.
The Catholic manuscripts were from Alexandria Egypt.
The Turks (The Islamic caliphate) sacked Constantinople in 1453 A.D. causing many Greek scholars to flee, taking their Greek Bible manuscripts to Europe.
The manuscripts that the Greek scholars fled with were used by Erasmus to compile the Textus Receptus.
These Greek scholars also taught The New Testament Greek language in universities where Erasmus, Luther, Tyndale, and many others learned it.
The King James Bible was published around a hundred years later in 1611 launching the Philadelphia church period.
The Philadelphia church period was the greatest Church age EVER. Not because I said so but because Jesus said so in Revelation 3:7-13.
The English translations that led to the Philadelphia Church age are:
1] Wycliffe Bible, 1380 – 1384
2] Tyndale Bible, 1525 – 1530
3] Coverdale Bible, 1535, this was a completion of Tyndale
4] Matthew’s Bible, 1537, used Tyndale and Coverdale Bibles
5] Great Bible, 1560, Revision of his Coverdale Bible
6] Geneva Bible, 1560, Revision of Great Bible with Calvinistic notes
7] Authorized Version, KJV 1611
And, as silver tried in a furnace of fire purified seven times [Psalm 12:6-7],
Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Psa 12:7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
Psa 12:8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.
the purified line STOPPED with the KING JAMES BIBLE!
NONE OF Those seven Bibles listed above are approved by the Roman Catholic Church to read.
Philadelphia, Revelation 3: 7-13
The Missionary Church 1611 – 1900
Jesus had only praise for this church and therefore you should take time to read all you can on it.
The Philadelphia church period was a time of great awakening and missionary outreach. Jesus said to this Church, “I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, AND HAS KEPT MY WORD, and hast not denied my name.” Rev. 3:8.
This Church not only preached and used the King James 1611 Bible, they also believed it to be the Word of God. And because faith and belief ARE CONTAGIOUS, there were very few of the common folk that questioned its authority as Scripture.
This was a time when itinerant preachers gave up all comfort and traveled preaching the word from church to church and city to city. They preached everywhere they could, including sidewalks and fields. This was a time when three continents, England – America and Europe, were evangelized for Christ.
DURING THE PHILADELPHIA CHURCH AGE, hundreds of thousands, and thousands more were saved.
Some of the preachers greatly used of God during the Philadelphia Church age are: Spurgon, Jonathan Edwards, Billy Sunday, Christmas Evens, Praying Hyde, Adornian Judson, William Carry, John Bunyon, Hudson Taylor, George Whitefield, The Wessleys, Bob Jones Sr., C.T. Studd, Moody, David Livingston, Jonathan Goforth, Charles Finney,
and a thousand other old time dedicated – bold – Christian soldiers who literally gave up all earthly possessions to preach Christ and Him crucified.
AND EVERY ONE USED A King James BIBLE and they never questioned its authority.
Adornian Judson took a King James Bible to Burma and by 1886, 30,000 had professed faith in Christ.
TRULY God blessed the King James Bible and those that used it.
Now, if that Bible is good enough for the Philadelphian church, Brothers and sisters, it’s good enough for you and ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR me!!!!!!
I’m going to believe what God has blessed, and I’m not going to question it.
Jesus said, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Mattew 17:16
In the next church [Laodicea] we will see the fruits of the new, more accurate, easy to read and understand, modern bibles of our enlightened twentieth century.
I fail to understand why any truly born again person wouldn’t believe that the King James 1611 Bible is 100% approved of God.
The last church, Laodicea, is the direct opposite of the Philadelphia church and Laodicea is an easy history to examine because we are living in it today.
LAODICEA, Rev 3: 14-22
The apostate church, 1900 – Until the Rapture 1st Thessalonians 4.13-18
Westcot and Hort receive the devil’s accolades for bringing in the Laodicean Church age that JESUS never found anything good to say about.
If you are looking for a Church make sure it is a Philadelphia type and not one that is an up to date I want to please you type.
2Ti 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2Ti 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2Ti 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Jesus had nothing good to say about our Laodicean church period. He fully condemned it.
This is the Church period that replaced the King James Bible!
The apathy towards God’s ability to preserve His word is one reason the world, today is so deep-rooted in apostasy.
There are over a hundred different -modern – easy to read – easy to understand bibles published in the twentieth century.
Is it any wonder that our nation questions that the Bible is the final authority of God?
LAODICIA AND THE KJV BIBLE
JESUS TOLD THIS CHURCH
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked Rev 3:15-17
TODAY American Churches are arrogant as they embrace the social gospel, toleration and replacement theology.
The church is the conscience of America and that’s why the purpose of the Christian church in safe guarding America’s Christian mores is so vital.
The Church is the only hope our country has.
This is how it works: the church sets the example of clean Christian living and preaches Scripture truth everywhere it can and to whomsoever will listen [John 17:17].
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Believers preach on the sidewalks and witness in the shopping malls. We are ridiculed and made the fool as Christ said we would be. Then as truth goes out, God uses it to convict hearts and change lives.
That is how it was done in the Bible Acts 20:18-36 and
that is how it was done in the Philadelphia Church age and
that is how it must be done in the twenty first century.
Arnold A. Dallimore in his book George Whitefield describes the “extrodinary fervour which characterized the men whom God raised up in” the Philadelphia church period:
“Men mighty in the Scriptures, their lives dominated by a sense of the greatness, the majesty and holiness of God, and their minds and hearts aglow with the great truths of the doctrines of grace.
They will be men who have learned what it is to die to self, to human aims and personal ambitions; men who are willing to be ‘fools for Christ’s sake’, who will bear reproach and falsehood, who will labour and suffer, and whose supreme desire will be, not to gain earth’s accolades, but to win the Masters approbation when they appear before His awesome judgment seat. They will be men who will preach with broken hearts and tear-filled eyes, and upon whose Spirit, and who will witness signs and wonders following in the transformation of multitudes of human lives.”
All of the above is not true of the Church today, and when the church stops having faith that Gods Word is true
then it looks to the world for its encouragement, money and comfort. That results in a conscience seared with a hot iron [1 Timothy 4:2].
and with its conscience seared the Church continues its faithless downward skid as it gets worldlier.
The lost in America slips deeper into degradation and the church goes merrily along with it.
The Laodicean church of today has wholly accepted a pragmatic theology and subjective reasoning.
THOSE WHO ARE NOT CALLING GOD A LIAR NEED TO do themselves a favor and stop doubying the power of God and TAKE A STAND ON THE King James 1611 BIBLE.
This finishes our study of Church History using the 7 Churches of Revelation as an outline.
My hope is that you have read enough to make you want to continue studying it. If you have I suggest you start with Peter Ruckman’s, Church History it is in two volumes. He has the only complete in-depth study on real Church history that I know about.
